AMCP Nexus 2021 Student Rewind

With a variety of networking opportunities and educational sessions, Nexus is the ideal place for an emerging managed care pharmacist. Don’t just take our word from it. Hear from student pharmacists who attended Nexus 2021:

Mohammad Kaker, PharmD, MSPGx

“AMCP Nexus 2021 truly was a one-of-a-kind experience. During this conference, I made many new friends, learned about exceptional residency programs, met industry leaders, and created memories that will last a lifetime. Managed care has always been an interest of mine but there was still so much I didn't know at that time. AMCP Nexus was the perfect space to meet like-minded individuals while exploring the many opportunities available to me in this field. The most valuable thing I gained from AMCP Nexus 2021 was learning about my current residency program at Southern Scripts. I decided to pursue this residency program after speaking with the residents and seeing the passion in their eyes during our conversation. The residency/fellowship showcase at AMCP Nexus is the best opportunity to learn about the many programs out there while finding out which one is the best fit for you. If you are a student deciding whether or not to attend AMCP Nexus 2022 this is definitely your sign to invest in your personal growth and register today!”

"I can’t believe it has almost been a year since Nexus 2021! Looking back at my first managed care conference, I can recall so many valuable memories and experiences that still resonate with me today. You would have recognized me as the guy walking around with wide eyes, semi-stunned as I soaked it all in, with the Rocky Mountains serving as a beautiful backdrop. As I sat in on the student seminars, I was introduced to concepts like outcomes-based agreements for orphan drugs, the value of real-world evidence, expedited approvals, and health disparities. Attending Nexus truly solidified the career I want to pursue after graduation. The air in the room was electric and had a similar buzz to what I imagine a high school reunion is like: catching up with old friends, lots of laughs and enthusiasm. The Conference Buddy System really helped me feel right at home, as I was introduced to many professionals who were more than willing to engage with a student like myself. I was able to build my network and meet so many likeminded people, both students and professionals, and I can’t wait to see them all again this year in National Harbor!”

“AMCP's Nexus 2021 was my very first conference. I was greeted at the conference hall by one of my friends on the Student Pharmacist Committee, and I had the opportunity to connect with several students on the committee. One of my favorite education sessions was on Managing Chronic Kidney Disease: The Impact of Reducing ESRD Progression and Complications, as this session aligned with the content of my Cardiovascular and Renal Pharmacology course at the time. The Residency and Fellowship Showcase was extremely informative and gave me the opportunity to explore multiple post-graduate programs in one session. In fact, I still have a bag full of literature from the showcase in my apartment! Keynote speaker, Sekou Andrews, was a wizard with words and it was inspiring to have him as one of my first impressions of AMCP. I even participated in the Conference Buddy program, and had the pleasure of meeting Marissa Schlaifer, RPh who is the VP of Policy at Optum and one of AMCP's past presidents! However, my greatest experience was connecting with several students from multiple pharmacy programs to create life-long colleagues and friendships! I am excited to attend AMCP's Nexus 2022 conference, as I am looking forward to learning about new post-graduate programs and reconnecting with colleagues!”

“Nexus 2021 was my first professional conference, and it did not disappoint! National conferences such as this one can be overwhelming and intimidating for a student. That being said, AMCP does a great job creating student-specific experiences. The AMCP Conference Buddy program is one of my favorite parts about these conferences. You (a student) get matched up with a professional that can help guide you through the conference, provide you with insider advice, and if you are lucky, become a resource for you in the future. One piece of advice I have for new conference goers is to walk through the poster session and ask the presenters to tell you about their research. These conversations have helped me to learn about managed care concepts I didn't understand well previously or didn't even know existed.”

“The AMCP Nexus conference in general is a great place to be! It is one of the few conferences that I have attended that has focused so much on student involvement and development. I was fortunate to receive the AMCP Midwest scholarship, which funded my conference attendance and travel. This resulted in a series of very exciting events! My greatest highlight was being included in an AMCP internal meeting with my conference mentor. I also enjoyed the Residency and Fellowship Showcase. This was the most rewarding part of the conference, as I was able to interact with many programs at this event. In fact, one of those interactions led me to securing a fellowship in Health Economics and Outcomes Research (HEOR)/Market Access with AESARA!”

“Nexus 2021 was my first in-person conference since I was in pharmacy school. My favorite part of Nexus was the Conference Buddy program. I was paired with Angel Ballew, the Senior Vice President of Pharmacy Clinical Operations at Envolve Pharmacy Solutions. She shared with me how she got into managed care pharmacy, how AMCP impacted her career, and the challenges she faced getting into and moving up in managed care pharmacy. She also shared with me tips on how to get the most out of the conference! I have carried the advice that she shared with me to my day-to-day life and it has genuinely impacted me positively. I personally love connecting with others and Nexus was a great place to do that! I am excited to attend AMCP's Nexus 2022 program to connect with other student pharmacists! I have gained many friendships through AMCP and I hope to be able to re-connect and gain more friendships this October!”

“My first AMCP Nexus could not have been more eye-opening. All of these potential pathways and expectations going forward in managed care were very welcome, and I was able to learn so much within this short week. I enjoyed and appreciated all of the new people I was able to meet, all committed to providing high quality outcomes to patients through medicine, discovery and policy within the big umbrella of managed care pharmacy. It was amazing to see the avenues professionals have taken (or are currently taking, regarding fellows, residents and other students I was able to meet) to secure better patient outcomes. I cannot wait to widen my horizons with all of the information the kind people of this conference were willing to share with me. Not to mention the CE sessions were extremely helpful in targeting topics pertinent and growing in importance as the small world of pharmacy continues to grow and keep our eye on. I had so much fun at this conference I can't wait for the next one, and I'm looking forward to asserting some new long-term goals with the help of the community within AMCP! Thank you to the folks who made this trip possible, as well as those that contributed to the lovely experience.”
