Unmasking Lp(a): A New Frontier in Cardiovascular Risk Management

Summary:
Elevated lipoprotein (a), also known as Lp(a), is a very common genetic lipid disorder that can cause early heart disease and stroke. Lp(a) is a powerful, independent risk factor for cardiovascular disease and represents a triple threat: it is pro-atherogenic, pro-thrombotic, and pro-inflammatory.  Despite being present in approximately 20% of the US population, <5% of individuals in the US have had their Lp(a) screened. Most professional societies recommend that all individuals have their Lp(a) measured at least once in their lifetime and a recent analysis has indicated that Lp(a) screening is not only cost effective but cost saving.  Please join the Family Heart Foundation for this important conversation!
